ABOUT THE PROJECT

After the success of BENEATH I in Venice and Paris, the first part of BENEATH II was shown in Vienna, Austria in September 2019 - projected on the facade of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

BENEATH invites us to give ourselves a chance to immerse under surfaces, into a surrounding where we are free to re-consider conventions and stereotyped points of view. - A place where we can drop our masks we think we have to wear to exist in our societies. - BENEATH is an invitation to change perspective and point of view.

Vienna was the kick-off for BENEATH II - and the project will be travelling on…we’ll be in big noisy cities around the globe - keep an eye open!

Specialised in under water visuals, the artist Susanne Stemmer invites us to change perspective and follow her under the surface.

The characters in her work are free and boundless as soon as they immerse. - A physical freedom with the imaginary loss of gravity as well as mental freedom, - opening the possibilities to re-consider conventions and drop masks and images considered to be necessary to survive in our societies.

A pause for a moment from the speed and noises of our cities, a rediscovery of a long forgotten freedom - an inner journey and reacquaintance with the self.

Presented for the first time in Venice, on occasion of Biennale Arte 2017, BENEATH is an artistic project which invites us to immerse under the surface and discover another world. The noises of the cities disappear, time seems to stand still. In this other universe beneath the surface, we are free and boundless. Alone and without any gravity we find tranquility to rediscover ourselves and drop our masks we imagine we have to wear to exist in our society.

Here - under the surface - we have the chance of a reacquaintance with ourselves.

Specialised in underwater photography, the artist Susanne Stemmer examines the changes that human beings experience after their immersion through the surface. The characters illustrated in her works are free and boundless as soon as they immerse. A physical freedom with the imaginary loss of gravity as well as mental freedom, abandoning their image, having the feeling nobody is watching them - finally being able to release themselves from all conventions and drop the mask they are wearing in society.

An inner journey begins into a world we rediscover ourselves, a dream world, photographed and still resembling an imaginary painting.
